Top 10 Athletes of 2009

2009 was another exciting year in the world of sports. A few of my friends and I got together and came up with the top 10 athletes of 2009. I hope my list will create some controversy, nothing better than a little water cooler smack talking……enjoy.
1. Kobe Bryant. Say what you want about Kobe, he lead the Lakers back to glory without Shaq. He showed he is still able to take over games. He also showed he can be a leader that can lead his team to a championship
2. Adrian Peterson. This man is a “beast.” He can do it all on the football field. He’ll run by you, around you, and through you. Favre coming back is key to the Vikings’ current success. If you take Peterson away the Vikings are not the Super Bowl threat they appear to be.
3. LeBron James. LeBron could have easily been number one, but the bottom line is he didn’t get the ring. One could argue he dominated the game more than anyone in the three major sports. Young as LeBron is, (what is he like 16?) he will have plenty of times to win rings and be 1 on many top ten lists.
4. Albert Pujols. I don’t expect baseball to get too much love here, but the bottom line is it’s the most difficult SKILL sport out there. There’s no other sport where 30% success can make you a millionaire. Mr. Pujols dominated the game in 09′. He was in the race for a triple crown at one time, and he seems to be getting better. You have to give the man his props.
5. Larry Fitzgerald. Even though Larry had a heck of a Quarterback, he (Larry) showed how he can take over a game. He did this all season, including on the biggest stage, the Super Bowl. Larry has all the tools: size, speed, explosiveness, focus and great hands.
6. Santonio Holmes. You can’t have a top ten list without mentioning the Super Bowl MVP. On the biggest stage Santonio lead his team to a Super Bowl Championship. He’s not having an outstanding year at this point, but he has a ring and the MVP trophy.
7. Drew Brees. I’m a Falcons fan. That’s all I got to say on this one. Sorry Saints fans it’s my list. Honestly, he’ll easily be the MVP, just not here.
8. Chris Peterson. Chris doesn’t get much publicity being a Tennessee Titan, but quietly he is approaching 2000 yards rushing for the season. Keep your eye on Mr. Peterson.
9. Derek Jeter. Derek really didn’t do anything too spectacular this year on the field. Mr. Jeter is, however, the captain of one of the most popular teams on the planet. If he’s not there, I don’t think they’ll get it done this year. He deserves the credit in the clubhouse and on the field as being the driving force of the New York Yankees.
10. Dwight Howard. Dwight is based in a small market town (Orlando), but physically he’s the second most intimidating body in the NBA. He’s atheletic, explosive, and gets better every year. If the front office can make the right moves, he could easily be number one on this list next year.

It would be nice to show the sport of Track and Field some love and give Usain Bolt an honorable mention…and I would move Derek Jeter up to number 4 or 5 at least…:-)
it may be your list but Chris Peterson don’t play tailback for titans but Chris Johnson does and I’ll respect him at number 8 on this list
