Should Gay Rights Be Equated With Civil Rights?

By Elev8 June 22, 2009 8:30 am

From BCNN1.com

Two attorneys from opposing political camps, David Boies, a Democrat, and Ted Olson, a Republican, announced last month that they plan to challenge California’s ban against gay marriage all the way to the Supreme Court. One of the cases Boies and Olson are using as a precedent is Loving v. Virginia, which, in 1967, ruled that it was unconstitutional for any state to have a law prohibiting marriage on the basis of race.

The plaintiffs, Mildred Loving, a Black woman, and her husband, Richard, a White man, had married nine years earlier in the District of Columbia. However, upon moving to Virginia, the couple challenged the state’s laws and wanted their marriage to be recognized as legal.

The Loving case has no similarity whatsoever to the issue of gay marriage or homosexuality, since skin color is morally neutral. This was a marriage between a man and a woman and the key issue was that, because Blacks had been denied full citizenship rights for more than 300 years, including the right to vote, many laws had to be challenged or changed. Yet, the use of legal cases, laws and the legacy of African Americans is the Trojan horse gay activists and their supporters have used to promote their political agenda.

Nearly every historical example used by gay activists to demonstrate why gay marriage should be legalized is based upon African-American oppression. Blacks were forced to settle for “separate but equal” schools; therefore, two men should be able to marry each other. Blacks had to sit in the back of the bus; therefore, gay couples should be able to adopt children. Blacks were denied access to public accommodations; thus, we should take the unprecedented step of redefining marriage and mandating that a homosexual relationship is the equivalent of a traditional, nuclear family. One wonders what arguments gay activists would use if the legacy of Black oppression was not at their disposal.

The comparisons would be laughable if their promotion had not achieved some level of success. Yet, liberals and some moderates have bought into the idea that taking a moral position regarding homosexuality is tantamount to discrimination and that, if gay marriage is legalized nationwide, there will be no societal impact from such a radical shift in America’s moral standards. And for anyone who claims there is no difference between the histories of Blacks and homosexuals, they need only reference the recent case in Philadelphia where a white woman falsely accused two black men of abducting her and her 9-year-old daughter. As in so many cases in the past, a generic black man was falsely accused of a crime so the real culprit could escape detection by the authorities.

And I apologize, I gave the wrong scripture… Its Genesis Chapter 19 if you want to read about Sodom and Gomorrah… Also Lev 18:22 states clearly..”Thou shalt NOT lie down with mankind as with womankind; it is an abomination”

cortney your ignorance shows very brightly.. smh.. The difference between whites(in history/and some still now) thinkin interacial marriage is morally wrong and homosexuality being morally wrong is that one is Bible, the other is not. God created ALL MEN EQUAL, which is one reason there should be NO RACISM but thats another topic. Plus Cortney I see you need to do your research, AA’s(african american’s) believed in God long before we got here. Don’t speak on something you know NOTHING about.. thank you

I know that many don’t believe in God nor His word, but God and His word is real no matter what we believe. Heaven and Earth may pass away, but His word will remain. He has already spoken in His word and showed how He feels about homosexuality. 1 corinthians 6:9-10 (AMP),Romans 1:26-28 (AMP) John 3:16. No, I’m not gay bashing, I love everyone no matter what. The wonderful thing about God is that He has given everyone of us the power of choice. Either we will choose life (His way) or death (our way) I don’t agree that gay rights should be civil at all but since God has given us a choice let them marry each other. We all will have to answer to God when we die. Make no mistake about it, after death there is no more grace or mercy. No one is born gay, we are made in Gods image and after His likeness. Homosexuality is not of God. Why would the God of love create a woman trapped in a mans body or a man trapped in a women body. This is not the work of God. Yes, God loves us all, but He will not tolerate sin. Sin was nailed to the cross. Yet, love and grace is not a sin free card.

Absolutely no similarity. NONE. Gay is an adjetive, not a person, place or thing. The civil rights movement included and covered everyone, even Homosexuals (a noun)

On the contary, I think it is the same. How many white people opposed marrying outside of their race based on their “morals”… I think it is senseless to hide behind the “morality” of your religion in trying to distance yourself from this debate. People being discriminated against and denied basic human rights is at it’s most fundamental point unconstitutional, and “morally” wrong at it’s most complex. It’s funny to me that AA’s base their opposition to homosexuality and the homosexual lifestyle on a religon they learned from their own oppressors…

Plain and simple it’s not the same. We should all be treated equally. While we can clearly see what race a person is when a human is born, it has yet to be proven whether a person is gay when they’re born.

Only God can give man rights and God did not give man rights to be a homosexual nor did he give women rights to be a lesbian. One of the first commandments given to mankind in the book of Genesis chapter 1 was to be fruitful and multiple and to replenish the earth. Furthermore, in Romans 1 verses 25 to the end Paul through the Spirit condemns that type of lifestyle. Black people didn’t ask or want to be oppressed, it was not our choice. Being a homosexual or lesbian is a choice. And no one is born that way, God doesn’t make mistakes with creation. Shalom.

There is a book called ‘After The Ball’. It was written by Marshal Kirk and Hunter Madsen, two Harvard-educated homosexuals, who set about creating a way to market their lifestyle in an acceptable, non-threatening way. That’s why they started distancing themselves from NAMBLA, (the pedophiles were openly welcome, and in fact speakers, at early rallies), and started equating their struggle with those of Blacks. Big piggy-backing off of the work Blacks did in the Civil Rigts Movement, it allows them to call any who oppose their perversion “bigots”. Here is a direct quote from the book… The trick is to get the bigot into the position of feeling a conflicting twinge of shame, along with his reward, whenever his homohatred surfaces, so that his reward will be diluted or spoiled. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways, all making use of repeated exposure to pictorial images or verbal statements that are incompatible with his self-image as a well-liked person, one who fits in with the rest of the crowd. Thus, propagandistic advertisement can depict homophobic and homohating bigots as crude loudmouths and a*****es–people who say not only ‘f****t’ but ‘n****r,’ ‘kike,’ and other shameful epithets–who are ‘not Christian.’… This is essentially a smokescreen. The hatred and perversion that has fueled them (See ‘White Night Riots’ and ‘Stonewall Riots’) is jut beneath the surface. That’s why their always in the middle of some nonsense and looking to start more. It’s a travesty that latched on to Black Rights as a cause. I suppose the pedophiles are taking notes. A man will be lobbying to marry a 12 year old boy next, simply because it’s discrimination if he’s not allowed.

I’m insulted… for a group of gay people to compare Black Oppression to their need to legalize a grown man and other grown man and vis vera to sleep together and have all the same benefits as a marriage between a man and a women..This is my opinion and i find it very sick..and this is part of the reason this country is doing so bad…they allow to much mess…

Celeste, the separation of church and state is the reason why this country is hellbound. Everyone thinks that what they want should be accepted regardless of the immorality and consequences. America is one of the most morally corrupt countries in the world. We need to get religion back in the schools and start teaching about what’s morally correct and what’s pleasing to God while our children are young. Then we wouldn’t have as many confused adults who think that our bodies are designed to sleep with people of the same sex. Furthermore, one’s race and/or the color of one’s skin can be legally and visually identified. One’s sexuality can’t. Would a homosexual be offended if one’s sexual orientation is asked on an application for employment just as they ask about one’s race or color (for identification purposes, so they say). Most people would be offended and feel that their sexual orientation is no one’s business. So be careful what you ask for.

Being Gay is a lifestyle not a race. Being Black or White (michael jackson) you can’t change, but being gay is a choice. Just because you feel gay don’t mean you have to be gay. I feel like slapping someone sometimes but I choose not to. Gay people using black oppression need not to do that because it’s not the same.

Celeste, you are severely misguided. Here’s a question: How many blacks do you know that had the option of “coming out of the closet” regarding the color of their skin? Exactly. Not one. Race, my dear, like a person’s sex, IS a foregone conclusion at birth. Those two things are clearly established, as is your HUMANITY. RACISM seeks to STRIP YOU of your HUMANITY, based soleley on the COLOR of your skin, and declare you only 3/5 human. The choice you make as to whether you want to have sex with a person of the same or opposite sex is just that: your CHOICE. Suppose one day a black person no longer chooses to be black. Does their desire to not be so make it any less factual? Ask Mike. He damn near killed himself in an attempt to shed his blackness, and is DYING as a result of all the treatments and chemicals used to defy this NATURAL CONDITION, and guess what? He’s STILL BLACK. Do NOT insult an entire race of people by making such a incredibly stupid, uninformed claim. Sleep with who you want, nobody cares. Just don’t dare insult my intellect by teling me that deviance should be normalized because a few celebrities want to openly get their freak on. That’s what has REALLY pushed this whole gay rights agenda. Bedroom business is just that. Nobody’s telling you to go in a closet; just stay in the room with that bull..

The comparison is insulting. I have nothing against gays, they are already very prosperous. Jesus said one man one woman for life. Marriage has been between a man and woman since beginning of mankind. We go down a slippery moral slope to redefine it.

I believe in equal rights for all including GLBT persons. However, I don’t believe it should believe it should be equated to the civil rights movement, because I’ve encountered some gay people that hated me because of the color of my skin.

I agree whole heartedly with this article but it should have made another point. Blacks don’t choose ta be born black, someone that is gay chooses that. I can’t stand when homosexuals compare what we went through and our rights with what they feel they should have.. God does not like homosexuality, infact if u read YOUR BIBLE, one of the most memorable things God did to destroy a city was because the men were homosexual(Sodom and Gomorrah… Lev chapter 19). God frowns on it and so should we. If u choose to be homosexual, that is a choice but marriage is sacred and smiled upon by God. Let’s keep it that way

@Celeste! How would you assume a learned behavior is a civil rights issue? Why use black people to push such an agenda?

I agree with this artical you cannot compare gay people with the oppression of Black people. Now if you want to call what happened to black people back and still in some areas today wrong then i could understand. The only thing gays are going through is that they want to be accepted by everybody and running around trying to adopt children which is messed up because then you mess up another individual the child.Gays are having such a hard time because what they are doing is sick for one and wrong. That’s an abomination. And people need to stop saying God made them that way because he didn’t,people aren’t born gay if that were the case the whole world would be that way. It’s a choice that you make because at some point in time or another somebody said that was wrong and probably said it more than once. After you’ve been told then it’s on you.I’m sorry black oppression and Gay marriage are not alike at all totally different.Gay people stop it if you want to get ahead you need to talk to God and give him some glory.

This is crazy! How do you compare apples and meat? When a crime takes place, they don’t say a gay person did it. It’s was black person. Why? Because it’s believable. How do they compare being black to being gay? Have to stones to compare a marriage between a black person to a white person verses same sex couple. Can a same sex couple have children?

    This is all justifying sin!

I concur with the author. Too many times while in university studying social work have I heard gay people declare their movement is the synonymous to the Black movement involving civil rights. They are being spoon fed this BS and to contrast it with the African American civil rights movement simply serves to denigrate any accomplishment Blacks have made from the slave house to the white house. They would maybe be better served to make a comparison between Jews and their movement (but that’s anti-semetic right?) than Blacks and the civil rights movement. The smoke sreens and mirrors being tossed about is simply meant to further push Black Americans down another rung on the ladder of progress, to draw attention away from OUR continued difficulties and to eradicate any consideration for our concerns. It is propaganda at its highest and in its essence DOES continue to oppress Blacks.

You’re a hate monger I can’t believe you’re spewing this ridiculous rhetoric. The issue of gay marriage IS a CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE! Have you ever heard of the separation of church and state? it is the very foundation that this country was built on.

Um, Maybe I read LeShannon’s comment wrong, did you say that Gay people wanting the right to marry is their attempt to be above the law? Didnt Blacks “change the law” when they demanded the right to vote or to marry? Our struggle and the Gay rights struggle are very different, but there are still striking similarities. The main theme being that they and we were denied certain rights because of something we cant help or would want to. Of course there is plenty of debate around this but I base my beliefs on Biology, not morality. So before you go bashing on them because you dont want blacks to be associated with Gays, maybe you should take a closer look at the facts, cuz there was a time when being Black was as taboo as being Gay, and unfortunately our government is enacting a subtler “seperate but equal” clause on them. Personally, Im proud that our sturggles can serve as a beacon for other oppressed people. So I think I’ll leave your opinion.

It is OH SO IGNORANT to compare the civil rights movement to Gay rights…I honestly don’t find any correlation between the two and find it HIGHLY offensive to black people when gay people compare wanting to be married to the civil rights movement and the struggles that blacks had and are still having to overcome just to get basic rights…have gays ever been denied the right to vote??? EXACTLY…the law on marriage is just that…a law, Gay people should not have more rights than straight people, but that is what they are asking for…permission to break the law, or change said law…in my humble opinion they are asking to be above the law, and then justify it by using someone elses struggle as a blueprint which i think is pitiful and desperate…just my opinion…take it or leave it…
