More Americans Pro-Life Than Pro-Choice for First Time
From Gallup
PRINCETON, NJ — A new Gallup Poll, conducted May 7-10, finds 51% of Americans calling themselves “pro-life” on the issue of abortion and 42% “pro-choice.” This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995.
The new results, obtained from Gallup’s annual Values and Beliefs survey, represent a significant shift from a year ago, when 50% were pro-choice and 44% pro-life. Prior to now, the highest percentage identifying as pro-life was 46%, in both August 2001 and May 2002.
The May 2009 survey documents comparable changes in public views about the legality of abortion. In answer to a question providing three options for the extent to which abortion should be legal, about as many Americans now say the procedure should be illegal in all circumstances (23%) as say it should be legal under any circumstances (22%). This contrasts with the last four years, when Gallup found a strong tilt of public attitudes in favor of unrestricted abortion.

i cant accept this garbage. because when planned parenthood fails, there has to be somethin to fall back on and that’s where abortion plays its biggest role. lets not forget that when a woman or girl is raped that she should never be required(or allowed, really) to keep the child. its when people are irresponsible on purpose and use abortion the way they should be usin a condom, thats when it shouldnt be given permission. between increased immigration and the teenage mother epidemic, we’re facin a growin risk of overpopulation in this country. kind of like how i believe alcohol and tobacco should be illegal in order to keep cancer-causin chemicals out of the air and drunk drivin from almost never happenin. “pro-life” HA! more like “pro-destruction of america”. this economy, in my opinion, is doin so poorly in part due to overcrowdin of the states. of course if nobody was gettin raped or doin unprotected sex, abortion wouldnt even be as big of an issue like it is. “pro-choice” should be called “pro-birth control”
Great,it’s good to hear from Nigeria that America the most valued and respected country is getting to be positive in sensitive issues like Abortion. I’m personally happy and have to say that it is a welcomed idea. Down here in NIGERIA such issues are treated with fear and trepidation. We are trying to improve all on the need to be for life.
