Heatwave Interactive is  truly a triple threat. The video game company, based out of Austin, TX is not only founded and owned by African Americans, run by African Americans (The CEO, CCO, and the top producer are all black men), but funded by the only African American Venture Capitalist Company in the United States.

Months of hard work and planning have culminated in the unveiling of the first hip hop Inspired Massively Multi-Player Online game (MMO), “Platinum Life.” Including hip hop icon, T.I., and based on the hip hop music lifestyle, Platinum Life, will allow gamers to advance through the ranks from unknown talent to hip hop mogul through a series of challenges that will expand the player’s knowledge of his “world” and earn him “street cred,” all without the violence inherent in so many video games.

“We love hip hop,” says Mykel Mitchell, Platinum Life,’s producer and co-creator, “but we wanted to make sure that the game was positive, too. Hip hop gets enough bad press.” The company has gotten some push back from a few gamers who can’t see how a hip hop game can be as engaging as World Of Warcraft, but for the most part the gaming community has responded very positively.

When asked what other hip hop greats Heatwave would be pursuing next, Mitchell responded that he was not currently at liberty to say, but the names on Heatwave’s roster are ones that “we all know and love.”

Yayy black people/company – I wish the game success and wish the company continued success. wow – it only took until 2009 4 black ppl 2 capitalize on our own shyt! I think some ppl from the 60’s might b just a lil proud right now…

Ok. I think it’s ill for the company to be black owned and producing mmo’s, but only thing is Why a Hip Hop Video Game??…Honestly if it does well i’ll be happy for company, i just feel black people have more to offer than just the same things. Meaning Sports ,Hip Hop and being Gangsta’s or gang bangers!!..Like i said hats off to the company and much success to them. Maybe their next game could be a little more creative.

Some people are SO negative. Damn you don’t have to bash them. In actuality, it truly is a first. All of the other video games mentioned were not created by Black people. I mean I’m not saying that some black kid wasn’t an assistant or something, I’m just saying the idea has never come completely from us. We owe it to these inspiring young men to at least give it a chance to bomb first. And fighting games are hardly intellectualized. I wish them plenty success!

This has been done before. Wu-Tang had a fighting game out back in 98 or 99 for the PSx. Then there have been those Def Jam fighting games. And lord Moonwalker from Sega all the way back in 1990. So putting a famous black person in a game isn’t anything new.

Looking at there site this is apparently going to be their first and only release to date. I’m hoping for the best because we are very stereotyped in the video game industry. I am quite interested in how they plan to implement hip hop culture without the violent aspect. Not to mention the top selling games in the industry are all violent/adult video games.
