Michelle Obama: “Let’s Move” Challenges Childhood Obesity
First Lady Michelle has announced a nationwide program called “Let’s Move,” which will address the problem of childhood obesity.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 16% of American children between the ages of 6 – 9 are overweight or obese. Obesity is more prevalent among African-American children than any other group of children. The numbers have been steadily climbing. If left unchecked, obesity can lead to heart problems, hypertension, diabetes, and a list of other ailments.
There are four key “pillars” to the campaign:
1)Better nutritional and exercise information for parents
2) An increase in physical exercise for children
3) Improving the quality of food available in schools
4) Making healthy foods readily available and affordable
Tip: Include healthy snacks in your child’s lunch. Tasty suggestions are sliced apples, celery sticks with peanut butter and trail mix.
Tip: Yoga is an excellent (and fun!) way for you and your child to get and stay in shape. It increases cardiovascular health, strength, agility and flexibility.

_A_ your absolutely right. When you talk to older people they ate almost as bad as we do today (Minus the fastfood). However, fried food, gravy, biscuts, pancakes, grease, etc. were definitely apart of their everyday meals. The key difference is what ingredients were used to make the food and how the food was grown. We have to attack these manufacturers and stop all of the additives and perservatives and eat fresh food again or none of the new generations will live to see 70. =(

On the surface, this sounds wonderful. But when you start to peel this back, it’s nothing more than a tool to gain more political capital for the President, in my view. First of all, what is the leading cause of obesity in children? Experts seem somewhat divided on this, but most would agree that the additives and preservatives that can be found in most foods on the shelves are great contributors. So whether were talking Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, MSG, Partially Hydrogenated oils, aspartame or thousands of other ingredients, the case has to be made, that unless you’re attacking these food manufacturer’s (Monsanto for one) on the garbage they put in the foods in the first place, you’re NOT REALLY attacking obesity, just making it appear as if you are.
