How Dora The Explorer Helped This Mom To Explain The Devil
When my four-year-old asked me about defeating the devil, I was at a loss for words – almost.
Luke 12: 11-12 (New International Version)
“‘When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.’”
One of my favorite times of the morning is the drive to school with my daughters. After we pray together, we listen to upbeat gospel music and sing our hearts out to God. My favorite artist to play for my children (and myself) is Fred Hammond, because his lyrics are almost always directly lifted right out of scripture. No matter what kind of start the morning has had, singing praise and worship together makes it even better. By the time the girls get to school, whatever problems they have had with each other or with Mommy have been washed away in a torrent of praise.
One morning as we were singing “Let The Praise Begin,” my youngest, who is four years old, stopped us all cold with a question. Over the din of music and voices raised in enthusiastic song, Kit shouted, “How do you utterly destroy the enemy’s chains when the praises ring?” If you are familiar with the song, you may understand the built in reference. For those of you who may be less familiar, in this particular song Fred Hammond proclaims the power of praise. The line to which my daughter was referring, the line of the song we had just sung, reads, “For the chains that come from the enemy are utterly destroyed when the praises ring. Hallelujah! Thank You Jesus. He’s exalted forever. Let the praise begin.”
In an instant I found myself with minutes to go before pulling into the school parking lot, charged with explaining to a four-year-old the potentially complex concept of spiritual warfare. All of my biblical teaching on the identity of the devil, the effectiveness of praise, the battlefield of the mind, went right out the window. I drew a total blank.
I do not believe in postponing answers to honest questions, especially those posed by children. When people ask questions of a spiritual nature, I have come to recognize that the Holy Spirit is at work. I never want to miss an opportunity to share God’s truth. Spiritual warfare, however, can be a frightening concept – especially if improperly explained. As I struggled to come up with something truthful, but not so scary as to frighten my daughter, it came to me. Rather, the Holy Spirit gave the words to me.
Kit is a huge fan of “Dora The Explorer” and is familiar with all of the show’s characters. For those of you who don’t watch the show as regularly as I do, Dora is the protagonist of every episode. Her sidekick and best friend is a talking monkey, named Boots. Every episode begins with Dora and Boots undertaking a quest, which requires the aid of a map and items Dora may have in her backpack, or that she and Boots must find on the way. Swiper, the fox, is the antagonist, who perpetually tails Dora and Boots, attempting to retard their progress by stealing the very items they need in order to complete their quest successfully.
Fully inspired by the Holy Spirit, I said to my daughter, “You know how Swiper is always trying to steal stuff from Dora and Boots?” She nodded that she did. “Well,” I continued, “the devil is just like Swiper. He’s always trying to steal from us the good stuff God wants us to have. When Dora and Boots want to stop Swiper they stand up and shout at him ‘Swiper! No swiping! Swiper! No swiping! Swiper! No swiping!’ right?” Again she nodded, this time even more enthusiastically.
I went on to explain to her that when we sing praises to God, it’s like telling the devil “Swiper! No swiping!,” and that the devil responds the same way Swiper does, by saying “Aw! Man!” and running away.
She responded with a big “Ooooh!” and a smile, then promptly asked me to turn the music back on so she could resume singing. It seemed to me that she had understood. Whew! Theological crisis averted. I love God. I know that my children’s spiritual instruction is even more important to him than it is to me. That morning’s question caught me off guard, but not him. His promise in the scripture above not only applies to our standing before a body of ruling authorities, having to give an account of our faith, but it applies to any situation where people desire an explanation of what we believe.
That morning, the Holy Spirit gave me the exact right words I needed to reach Kit Mitchell with his message on the significance of praise. His explanation was simple, truthful, and age-appropriate. I’m sure that this won’t be the last time my daughter asks about deep, spiritual matters. I am confident that God will continue to give me the right words in whichever situation I find myself with her or with anyone else. I am grateful to know that I don’t need to know all the answers. I just need to know him.
I also know that he will do the same for you as you have need!
Be blessed Family!

Great montage.
Wow that is awesome, this is truly inspirational!
First off- the child is 4 – so her mother should tell her to go research for herself? lol…that’s insane. Jesus often used parables to illustrate the concepts he was teaching – can you explain the difference between his parables and what this mom did? Jesus, for example, likened the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed which although small can grow to be a tree large enough for birds to nest in it. Or wait – maybe you think he REALLY meant that the Kingdom of God is a mustard seed that grew into a tree – and only birds are welcome there. Come on people – be real. What she did was suitable in her situation – that’s not to say it’s the only way – and I’m sure that’s not the only way she teaches her daughter. She wrote about singing gospel songs together – she is helping to foster curiosity in her children and then providing explanations to their questions in terms they can understand RIGHT NOW. Not in 20 years after they figure it out on their own, the hard way.
Its rare for a blog on Elev8 to receive this much feedback. I guess talk about God, the devil and religion in general will incite that. I have personal beliefs on this subject that I never reveal unless I’m asked. Religion over the years has been the source of MANY wars, bloodshed and loss of life, and in this case, anger, frustration, passion etc. and so I tend personally tend to stay out of the fray (except this past Christmas, when I felt like Michael Coreleonne {sp?} everytime i tried to back out, they kept pulling me back in) My issue with this particular blog was not even the religious aspect but rather, the use of an inanimate object as a tool to teach of young children. I have to be honest, nothing disgusts me more than to hear people say, I learned such and such from electric company, or sesame street. I personally believe that this early indoctrination of learning from the TV has led to a lot of critical health issues in our children which is another topic for another day. Bottom line, next time your child has a question, instead of letting Dora answer it for you, tackle that yourself, and if you can’t, go get a book (preferably one that has a human as the teacher) to assist you, or better yet, encourage your child to research it themselves. This nonsense about your children not being able to grasp certain things is not based on anything scientific. Stop teaching your children foolishness about 3 blind mice, or cows jumping over moons and start using reality based examples, you may be shocked to see how rapid their development is. Why is it necessary to use fictional, make believe foolishness to teach children to read? for their imagination? why not get them to start imagining themselves about where and what they want to be in 15, 20, 30 years? It should never be too early for that!
Lol religious beings are so funny everything from the sacrifice of good and risen up was taken from Horus an Egyptian god who has been sacrificed for his peoples in the Egyptian days he was the first god and this has taken place in 2000 years ago and thus when he was sacrificed his father Osiris his risen Horus back to life and the bible is nothing but a book stolen from Paganism and Akrisha and other religion stories the Catholic just f**ks peoples like you in the as to believe everything the bible says also so everything in the bible is different stories from other religions and also this may be random but how the f**k do Xians not believe in Santa but yet believe in a talking snaked and a long bearded hippe xD
D_Sean,
Now you KNOW you my boy…I respect you, you know this!
But are you serious?? It is like a parent and children? Ok, If I had 2 kids and one was obedient and the other disobedient..gotcha, Now let me put a spin on it so you hopefully get where Im coming from..If I did attend church, and one of my children was very much into it and the other was dead set against it….Would I punish the child that didnt want to go?? NO I WOULDNT because its called FREE WILL! If one of my kids didnt listen to me and the other one did, does that mean I love that one any less?? NO I wouldnt love him/her any less than the other. See you cant use that god/parent humans/child analogy because I as a real parent have at times had one child go against the grain and the other listening to me. Do I treat them any different…ofcourse not. I would treat them the SAME because they are BOTH MY CHILDREN no matter what. Reward one and punish the other is NOT the way to raise a child in my opinion.
Now evidently with your analogy you must see non believers as the disobedient child and believers as the obedient ones. Let me clue you in on something and I think I can speak for all if not most atheists when I say this. We do not care if we dont get into this famed yet non existent ‘heaven’ you speak of. We are not looking forward to ‘life after death’ because it doesnt make sense to fight and struggle, pray and beg, plead and burden ourselves with something that NO ONE is even sure is there.(Show me a brochure about heaven and I might convert). We are not looking for ‘eternal’ life whatever that may be. We are more interested and content and satisfied with living life for the RIGHT NOW, which is all ANY OF US can realisticaly do. This heaven you speak of, have you seen it? Has anyone you know been to heaven and assured you it exists? OR once again are you simply going off of the WORD OF MEN? Men who like parents, tell their children silly fairy tales i.e., “Put your tooth under your pillow and the tooth fairy will come and leave you money”, “Alright, if you dont go to bed the boogey man will get you!”, “Be good or santa isnt going to bring you and presents”, JUST to keep some form of control over them. Sorry luv, but those fairy tales of heaven and eternal life do NOT appeal to me, they never have and never will. And think about it…I dont give ANY Credit to ‘god’ for anything I have accomplished in life, and I have accomplished some great things for myself…If I am so disobedient then why is YOUR ‘god’ STILL ‘blessing’ me with what I have and who I am? If I am the disobedient ‘child’, why have I not felt all these great punishments? And if ‘god’ is waiting for my ‘afterlife’ to punish me, then damn, what is it going to matter if im already dead….
ps-
the ”Devil” = hatred, fear, jelousy, lust, lies, negativity, selfishness, etc etc etc…….
the ‘Devil’ is our lower (animal) nature.
while we were created in the image/likeness of the ONE Creator who goes by MANY names, depending on what langauge/culture you personally gravitate towards.
think of the Sphinx (Heru-Em-Akhet) in Egypt. Human-face and Lion-body.
our divine-nature ruling our animal-nature.
remember Jesus riding into town on the donkey/A.S.S ??? the donkey is very strong but stubborn and stupid. remember after his 40 day fast, the ‘devil’ tried to tempt him to sell-out, but he didnt go for it. just like his muslims will say the REAL ‘jihad’ is within YOURSELF. Armageddon being good versus evil.
its INTERNAL !!!
quiet as its kept, black folks accepted Christianty to an extent cuz it was a REMIX of stuff we had long ago created…

but I digress, religion is only a tool.
it can elevate us OR oppress us, so PLEASE dont take it on face-value.
@ Califemme23, think about it. A parent has 2 kids. One is obedient 2 his parent, and the other is disobedient. Would it be fair 4 da disobedient 2 b rewarded with the obedient child?
Again. When a parent has a child who thinks they’re 2 grown, and they dont have 2 listen 2 da parent, what does the parent usually say? Dont they say “either live by rules, or get our my house” The parent also says “I brought u n2 this world, and ill take u out” Well then, in the same way, if a man or angel, doesn’t wanna live by Gods law, then they not coming in his house (heaven)
If God was in control of a man, do u honestly think that racism, murder, crime, lying, cheatin, abuse, rape, and all other negative things would be going on? If so, then u r associate God wit negative things. If God was in control of ppl, then everybody would be perfect, and sinless, just as he is. None of this evil things would be goin on. We aint like God, but God has given us discernment to choose between right and wrong. I cant force my child 2 do everything that I do, but I hope that the child would do right.
Its the same thing what ur own kids. When your kids leave the house, you expect them 2 do the right thing. When your children go 2 school, u expect them to do the right thing. But if they dont do whats right, wouldn’t u punish them? Since ppl like 2 believe that we’re all Gods children, then those who are obedient 2 him, will enter n2 heaven. But those who choose be disobedient wont. Its simple.
D_Sean, “God controls no 1, he wants us to choose him”
Ok if god controls no one, then why is it the people who DONT choose him are doomed to some fiery hell and punishment? Thats like saying..”Go ahead and eat what you want to, Im not trying to make you eat what I say eat, BUT if you dont eat what I say, then im going to KILL YOU!”, what kind of choice is that?
well put D Sean that was excellent(both comments). Cali and I have kissed and made up. We talked like two mature adults do in PRIVATE stated our positions, and agree to disagree. She is a cool person, just (VERY) passionate when it comes to her race.
@ Maatra, Im having a hard time understand u. In 1 post, you said “Phuck Jesus” now ur using a scripture, improperly, for your own use. Jesus did not say that to the Gentiles. He said that to the Pharisees, which were black Jews. And another thing, when he said, “You are of your father the devil, and want to do the desires of your father” This was a way of saying, you want to do evil, just as the devil is evil. If you read that entire conversation, Jesus was saying, that he does the things of God, because God is good. But they want to do the things of the devil, because the they’re evil, just like the devil.
Now Im proud 2 be black, but lets not deceive ourselves into believing that an entire race is evil. If a kkk member, tells his kids, that the black man is evil, and you tell ur kids that the white man is the devil, then how are yall different? Lets be 4real, yea there are alot of racist ppl, but lets not condemned the whole race as a whole.
For instance, if a women gets raped by a black man, and she blames the entire race for what he did, would that be fair to the entire black race when we had nothing to do with it? You shouldn’t spread that hate, because they’re some decent white ppl out there, who dont c color, they only c ppl. And if a white person, and black person only sees color, then how much different are they from bloods and crips?
And since you wanna quote Jesus, Jesus said this in Matthew Ch 5 ver 43-44 “You have heard that it was said “ You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy” 44 But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”
@Califemme, I could answer that without scripture. Both angel and man was given freewill to decide for themselves. And that freewill, is to choose Gods way and follow him, or to be disobedient to God and do your own thing. But God didn’t make man and angel do do whatever they want, he made us 4 his purposes. God dont want to control no 1, he wants us to choose him.
Just as a women doesn’t want to be forced into loving a man, so doesn’t God wants to force man and angel n2 loving him. Its by choice. Lucifer became the devil, because of his pride, beauty, authority and wisdom. By these 4 things, he wanted 2 b God. he was beautiful, and as u know, alot be pretty ppl becomes stuck on themselves. He was filled with wisdom. And ppl who are smart, tend to look down towards others, as if they’re always right. And God gave him authority over legions of angels. All of this made him proud. And with these 4 things, man also wants 2 b God.
Both men and women tend to view themselves as gods. God didn’t create anything evil, he made all things good. When Lucifer was 1st created, he was blameless. But when the 1st man was created, he became jealous of Gods love 4 man. But by a man and angels, own freewill, they can choose either good or evil paths
undralique,
When you meet someone who has shaken hands with satan, who by the way is supposedly god’s creation, which in turn would mean that he satan is part of the ‘plan’, let me know…Dont give me scriptures, GIVE ME WHAT YOU PERSONALLY KNOW..Hmmm, dont worry, i’ll wait..
bluephi1993,
lol..That’s nice that you can find someone who will ‘cosign what you think’…thats the big difference between you and I..I do not NEED someone to cosign what I think…My own strength is enough…I dont live by the ‘crutch’ that religion presents…
People forget that in order for everyone to grasp the concept of what Jesus was sayin about our lifestyle andthe choices that we make, he usually explained it in a parable where the educated and uneducated could fully grasp the concept of living your life for God and tools you need to eternal life. Also if you don’t believe that Satan exists, you will surely get a rude awakening. Look it up Ephesians 6:12. God bless you Ms. Mitchell
You are funny cali, you have NO clue who I am and what I have done as far as research. You assume, and we both know what to consider with that word.
I will not continue to argue with someone who has no clue. I can find anything if I look for it, and someone to cosign what I think.
bluephi1993,
The definition of ‘ignorance’ is LACK of knowledge/awareness. Do a LITTLE research about your ‘faith’ and then tell me who is ignorant…LACKING KNOWLEDGE…
bluephi1993,
“anger and frustration about life cali that you vent against those that choose to believe in something you do not want to understand. Let go my sister and allow God to heal you.”
Allow god to ‘heal me’? Who told you I was injured? Who told you I have anger and frustration about life? Oh im sorry, because you believe in god that makes you a mind reader as well? Well damn. I dont knock anyone that believes in ‘god’. I just dont have to. See thats why this box is right here that says I can post whatever I want to, god fearing or not. Why is it whenever ANYONE disagrees with one of you religion thumpers they are automatically angry, frustrated or doomed in some way? How about we JUST have a difference of opinion.
“she did not force her views on her children and if she did oh well”
THAT is exactly what im talking about…if she did oh well? You are right, we do influence our childrens lives because we are supposed to..BUT I will not FORCE something like religion. There are so MANY holes poked in your bibles and the good ‘word’ it would take me a year to post it all here. Sorry babe if I choose NOT to teach my daughters about an entity, about something even christians call a ‘ghost’. I am a college grad, I work, I LOVE what I do, Im healthy, and very content with MY life and plan to do more to further it…WITHOUT giving all good grace and glory to ‘god’, I NEVER have. I give all credit to ME and those who raised me to be who I am. You and I are probably doing very well, educated etc..and you believe and I dont..So what is your point?? I know for a FACT that I am in a better position than A LOT of ‘believers’. Again, what is your point? My neighboors are losing their home to foreclosure as we speak, and they go the church EVERY sunday without fail, I’m not in fear of losing my home and I dont pray or worship ANYTHING…Again, What is your point? I refuse to enduce an unatural FEAR of something in my children’s lives. That my dear is unfair to them. I choose to let them figure it out for themselves when they are in a mental position to understand it. I dont vent about your beliefs, I ask questions that NONE of you have answers to. All any of you can do is quote some scriptures, NEVER speak from your own minds…It’s called BRAINWASHED.
When slaves stepped off the ships in amerikkka, they were handed a bible by white people, meaning that OUR people had no clue of christianity until they were stolen and brought here..It sickens me that so many BLACK people openly embrace that age old MIND CONTROL. Like SoularFlarez said..”FEAR will paralyze you”, I dont live paralyzed. If I dont believe in forcing such fake characters as the easter bunny, santa claus, or the grinch, then why would I believe in religion? A bunch of fairy tales created by MAN to control people, namely OUR people. Now you go ahead, whomever and respond back with NOT your own thoughts but a hundred different scriptures from your MASTERS bible…
FEAR will paralyze you.
being scared, you will believe and do whatever you’re told. wether it makes sense or not.
FEAR is a very low vibration.
teach them LOVE instead !!!
KIDS HEAR…..
be good and Santa will give you presents
be bad and the BoogeyMan will snatch you up
______
Grown-up Kids HEAR….
be good and go to heaven
be bad and burn up with the Devil
like kids aint got enough to be scared of….SMH
the babies are comen out the womb on a much higher frequency/vibration than they used to, so I am VERY OPTIMISTIC !
I got two kids so I can drop in a little two sense on this issue. Ask your child what does he/she thinks about the question. Even if they keep asking, get them to explore an answer. because when it really comes down to it we as parents don’t have all the answers but it’s mandatory that our children come up with the same conclusions that we have in the past. Right? Which is really none sense. Sure teach them about God but they have to learn about God and Love only the way we as parents want them. And don’t worry as a parent I’m guilty of this too.
Really the most important thing is you teach them about Love because if God is love then what else is there.
On a simpler note you couldv’e just said “God is real, the devil is not, but people just made him up cause they need a bad guy. Because honey in all of God’s infinite power and wisdom why in the world would he allow a thing like the devil to exist”
Now go ask Dora, she knows.
I typically do not respond to ignorance, but I could not avoid this one. Cali-A and Maatra you have your views and beliefs, and I will be praying that all of you will wake up in the future. I do feel Maatra on certain levels and even A has some good points, but cali you are so wrong. She did not force her views on her children, but if she did oh well. I am sure if you have children you influence their view on life as well. We all do. That is what raising children is about.(train up a child in the way he should go) You have so much anger and frustration about life cali that you vent against those that choose to believe in something you do not want to understand. Let go my sister and allow God to heal you.
What good is it to explain something in an adult manner to a child that will not grasp the concept, we do it in our schools everyday. Children learn differently than adults that is why we go through stages with education.
Al whites are not the devil, and all blacks are not spiritually minded, as we can see here, so do not be so broad and blanket. God wants us all to love each other, That is the only thing I should do, but I am cautious trust me I am. The sad part is we get a little education and learn some critical thinking and think we can be critical in our views and that makes us right, lol yall are silly.
blah @ these comments…people kill me with their desire to be so “deep”. To each its own…
@snobuni, Allowing Dora the Explorer, or any other fictional character to teach your child is usurping the responsibility of the adult. Parents like you who choose this as a tool to teach, are really just looking for an easy way out of an adult situation. You have nerve to talk about Maatra? At least the brother takes the time to teach his child, rather than allow cartoon characters to turn his children into mindless adults. You won’t have to worry about keeping your children away from anyone else, they will probably be so dumbed down, after they have graduated from cartoon characters, to being video game junkies at the same time suffering from arrested development. Just to clue you in, children have been raised in past decades and centuries without the assistance of Dora the Explorer. Stop being lazy and stop letting Dora and other fictional characters be a mentor to your child. I could care less what you do with your children to be honest, but your elitist attitude disgusts me!
maatra, gotcha…(smile)
Califemme that’s what my wife got my daughter callin her sacredness…Cocoa
WOW! @ MAATRA with the ‘mommas cocoa’ reference..never heard that one before..
And again WOW at the writers using an innocent childs cartoon to explain the ‘devil’? This article helps prove my points about how NO CHILD should be forced, yes FORCED to take in religion when it is clear that they dont understand it. This woman is brainwashing her children with HER OWN beliefs as opposed to allowing them to be free flowing individuals and make their OWN educated decisions when the time comes. The child is singing to the top of her lungs and doesnt even get what she is singing about. She might as well throw on some lil wayne and let the girl sing along because she wouldnt get that either. And if ‘god’ is so very powerful, all knowing, all encompassing…WHY do people have to teach this to anyone else? If that is the case and he wields oh so much power, wouldnt EVERYONE naturally FEEL the presence? I don’t believe in sugar coating anything to my daughters of 12 and 9 years of age and I damn sure wouldnt use a cartoon to explain something. That is how MISSEDUCATION begins and seemingly never ends…My parents allowed my sister and I to choose whatever faith, religion, OR non religious belief for that matter. IF we allow our kids to choose what college they go to, what areas they want to live in when they grow up, we dont have a say so in what kind of car they choose to buy, what careers they want to go into, then WHY do people insist upon choosing what their offspring should believe in to ‘rule’ in their lives…Hmmmm can we say CONTROL???
Racist? How come jews from asia whoop paul in acts 21:28… Because paul brought GREEKS (whyte ppl) into the temples and defiled the holy place. WHOS THE RACIST? THIS IS IN THE BIBLE
The whyte man is the devil thus says the lord
Oh wow – these people on here are going overboard. Why would you be so crude and disgusting when explaining an abstract concept to your children? Maatra – good to know you’re raising tactless racists – I’ll be sure to tell my kids to look out for people like them.
I think that was an appropriate way to use a metaphor when explaining to a young child a concept that most adults still have trouble with. I think it IS important for the child to understand as best they can at the time they ask the question. Putting it into adult terms doesn’t do them any good when they are faced with learning to pray and call upon the Lord – even as children.
Kudos to Sheeri Mitchell – and I will say a special prayer for those wayward parents who have no concept of raising children to understand right from wrong. How many of you sat in church with your parents every Sunday – not understanding a word the pastor said – and therefore took many wrong turns in your life that could have been avoided if you had been taught in a way that children can relate to. Adults learn different than kids – kids are not just ‘mini-adults’, and you can’t expect them to grasp adult concepts the same way we would. Good luck – You’re gonna need it!
When yo child question u about sex, how will u sugar coat that?
Keep it real wit them. My kids 12 and 7 know that me and they momma bumped and grind and that they was in my balls before I put them in they mommas “cocoa”
They also know that the DEVIL is the white man.
The very same ones that the Haitians defeated are the ones that caused that “earthquake” kilin many. Where was the cries of “NO SWIPER NO!!!”
Keep it real wit ya babies
my son have to keep puttin my daughter in check for sayin “PICNIC” which means Pic a NIGER when the devil use to run around pic a niger to hang cut up cook and eat
Jeremiah 1:14 then the lord said, out of the NORTH an EVIL shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land
Jesus said to those gentile jews in john 8:44 you are of your father THE DEVIL
AND THATS WHY I CALL MY CAR DORA THE EXPLORER!!!! HA!!!
No disrespect, but I find it almost laughable that someone can’t explain something they say they believe? What is the basis of that belief, if you can’t properly articulate it, even to a child? The child doesn’t have to fully understand it at that time, like many other things, there will be an “ah hah” moment down the line in life. I also find it more troubling that an animated character is left to explain this and many other things to our children. I wonder if there is any connection to the lack of respect our children have (generally speaking) for the world and the over indulgence in watching cartoons full of fake phony characters? Doesn’t it seem like children in the past (generally speaking) had more respect for parents and adults when they learned life lessons from adults (human beings) in the home and not from Big Bird and the cookie monster? Believe it or not, but that TV is the biggest tool the devil is using to lead our young people astray and should be shunned whenever possible. Just my two cents.
That was truly awesome. why cant we find more articles like this in the news. This is worth talking about. glory be to god.
very good way to help children understand, God bless
