As an editor you get to pick and choose what gets posted and what does not. This morning I looked through some of the photos for the annual MET Gala. The Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Gala and also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. It marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Each year’s event celebrates the theme of that year’s Costume Institute exhibition, and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the night since guest are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit. The 2015 Gala and its theme of “China: Through the Looking Glass” became the subject of a documentary directed by Andrew Rossi produced by Condé Nast Entertainment, Vogue and Relativity Studios.
Now, with such an engaging imaginative theme, I wonder how it was interpreted to mean “lets get naked and add sparkles”. I was struck by the nearly naked outfits of a few women who are key tastemakers in the industry.
I get it. Your bodies are beautiful. Do we have to look at them all the time though?
I have a few questions. Why must entertainment and fashion events be ones that devalue your life as a servant, mother or woman? In particular, why must you dress in a manner that denigrates your talent and beauty as a woman? No one says that you must wear a paper sack.
Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
Without question the greatest reason that we live for God is our unwavering belief in the resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. It is through His resurrection from the grave that we have hope and the promise of life eternal with him. In 1 Corinthians chapter 15, the apostle Paul explains that, because of these promises of a future resurrection and of living eternally in the kingdom, believers have not only the motivation but also eternal responsibilities for our lives here on earth. Simply put, our responsibility lies in working for the Lord, whether it is in “looking after orphans or widows in distress” (James 1:27), giving to the hungry, the naked, visiting those in prison (see Matthew 25:35-36), serving in our workplace (see: Colossians 3:22), or doing whatever we do (Colossians 3:23).
And our motivation is that we have God’s own promise that our work “is not in vain” in the Lord “since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving”. This means that we need to be careful about what we proclaim on a main stage where everyone is looking.
Modesty, humility and true celebration of the beauty of a woman can be done. Take a look at some other women at the same event who looked stunning!
