Multi-award-winning producer, writer, and artist Donald Lawrence recently caught up with Get Up Mornings with Erica Campbell, where he spoke about his new single, “Words,” and his passion for honoring the legends who paved the way for him.
In the interview, Lawrence shared that “Words” is the first single from his “Music and Arts Global” project, which he recorded live in London at the request of the late, great Edwin Hawkins. Featuring one of his singers, Blanche, the track showcases Lawrence’s signature style and was inspired by a desire to honor those who influenced him in gospel and music. He mentioned that he has always been a fan of legendary artists such as Edwin Hawkins, Twinkie Clark, and Vanessa Bell Armstrong, citing them as big inspirations for his career.

Lawrence also discussed his broader vision, which includes multiple upcoming projects. He’s planning to release a new album this year, though it won’t come out until 2025. Additionally, he’s excited about an international conference in Stockholm, Sweden, scheduled for May 1st through the 3rd, where a massive 800-voice choir will come together to celebrate music and arts. Lawrence has spent years cultivating strong relationships with European musicians, and he stresses the importance of building meaningful connections outside of performing.
In the interview, Lawrence shared an important lesson he recently learned from Pastor Winston: “Be mindful of your first words.” He emphasized how powerful words can be, particularly the first ones that come out of our mouths each day. According to Lawrence, the song “Words” is a reminder to be mindful of how we speak, especially when it comes to ourselves. He pointed out how hurtful, angry, and deceitful words have become prevalent and hopes that people will shift toward speaking positivity and love. His message for 2025 is to speak life into your day, to be careful of what you say, and to uplift others with your words.
