Scripture encourages believers to practice many spiritual disciplines, such as fasting, serving, reading God’s Word, and praying. Prayer is an essential part of a believer’s life. The beauty of prayer is that it connects us with God on a heart level. Prayer is where we can hear what’s truly on our hearts and align ourselves with His will. It’s also where we reclaim the authority God has given us, standing on His promises in Scripture.
For singles, prayer is a sacred space. It’s where we can be honest with God about what we’re carrying: our burdens, frustrations, disappointments, and even the disillusionment that comes from waiting. Let’s be honest: many singles have prayed for things that haven’t come to pass yet, and waiting can be challenging. But prayer is also where we renew our hope. It’s where we remind ourselves that God hasn’t forgotten us.
From my experience, prayer has been where I’ve poured my heart out to God about my desire for marriage. But it’s also been where I’ve prayed for my future spouse. What surprised me most was how praying for my future husband revealed areas where I needed growth. Prayer has a way of doing that; it shows you the parts of yourself that need work. And if I’m expecting my future spouse to show up ready and whole, it makes sense to be doing that work myself.
How to Pray for Your Future Spouse
In Matthew 6, Jesus gives us a simple yet profound prayer structure during His Sermon on the Mount: the “Our Father” prayer. This prayer presents one example of how we can approach God.
- Adoration – Acknowledging who God is and praising Him.
- Confession – Owning up to the ways we’ve fallen short and seeking forgiveness.
- Supplication – Asking God for what we need.
- Thanksgiving – Thanking Him for what He’s done and trusting Him in the spirit of expectation for what’s to come.
Using this framework, here are some helpful tips on how to pray for your future spouse.
1. Adoration and Praise
Start by focusing on God, who He is, and what He’s done. Consider your requests in light of His character and promises.
Example:
“God, thank You for being faithful in every season of my life. Your Word says You know the desires of my heart, and You give good gifts to Your children. Thank You for always providing for me, even in ways I didn’t expect. I trust You to provide in this area of my life, too.”
During adoration and praise, you ground your prayer in trust, reminding yourself of His faithfulness.
2. Confession
This part is about being honest with God and clearing anything that might be standing in the way. For me, that meant admitting when I’ve made marriage an idol—when I’ve let my longing for a spouse overshadow my pursuit of God.
Example:
“Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve prioritized my desire for marriage above my desire for You. Help me keep You first in everything and trust Your timing completely.”
3. Supplication
Now, you bring your specific requests to God. When I pray for my future husband, I prefer to highlight these five key areas in prayer:
- His character – That he would reflect Christ in his actions and choices.
- His mind – That his thoughts would be rooted in God’s truth.
- His purpose – That he would walk confidently in God’s calling for his life.
- His health – For his physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
- His family – For peace, unity, restoration, and godly relationships.
Example:
“Lord, I ask that You prepare my future husband to be a man who seeks You first. Help him grow in character, wisdom, and strength. Protect his health, guide him in his purpose, and bless his relationships with those around him. Prepare us both to honor You in how we live and love.”
Prayer is an essential discipline that we are privileged to have. It allows us to communicate our needs, desires, and grievances to God. Although there are several forms of prayer, such as lament, intercession, and salvation, the “Our Father” serves as an excellent model for structuring our prayers. Praying in this format helps you reflect on God’s character, examine your desires, and release the longings of your heart.
