Today commemorates the last day that Michael Jackson’s remains will rest above ground. I was hoping that Neverland would be the place to call home for his memorial site and had every intention of making the pilgrimage there. I still can’t believe that we’ll never see him again – alive. With all of the hoopla, let us remember that although he was one of the biggest superstars of our time, he is the first child of his parents to die. I have no idea what it is like to bury my child and I am not going to pretend to understand what they may be experiencing. All I know is, we are all appointed once to die and it is our job to make sure that while we are here we do the best we can to glorify the Father.
With all that is being heralded on the news lately about Michael Jackson and his choices – especially from the NY Congressman Peter King who “blasted Michael Jackson as a pervert and a pedophile,” I am reminded of the incident in the Bible where THEY wanted Jesus to do something about this woman who had been sleeping around. Ignoring their requests, Jesus said, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” They eventually went away being convicted by their own indiscretions. It wasn’t the fact that she sinned because apparently she had; it was the condemnation of her from the peanut gallery that became the bigger issue. Now, I have no idea if those allegations against the self-proclaimed, “king of popular music” are true and if they are…shame on him (although every story seems to be full of gaping holes), but whatever the case, let’s not get this thing twisted; none of us are without fault. We are all contaminated with the ugliness of humanity, it just so happens that his was ever present because of his celebrity and we get to hide behind the normalcy of our lives. The line is thin but we have to be careful of the condemnation on people that can so easily become the landscape of our lives. It breeds hatred and isolation in ways that are destructive and sometimes irreparable. I have had to check myself in the recent years as it relates to personal matters of my own so I understand how the things can become blurry. I’m just saying…check yourself! Start with the man in the mirror and make THAT change.
R.I.P. Michael Jackson! I pray for the strength of his family as they cope with his loss.
