Traditionally in the United States, Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September. The holiday celebrates the contributions of workers to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the American economy.
The first Labor Day was held by the Central Labor Union in New York City on September 5, 1882. It’s unclear who proposed the celebration. Some say it was Peter J. McGuire, a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, while others credit Matthew McGuire, secretary of the Central Labor Union.
The holiday spread to other cities and states, until 1894, when Congress passed legislation making the first Monday in September a national holiday.
Labor Day has become an important retail sales event, with some reports putting it second to only Black Friday in sales weekends. Ironically, this means many employees will work on Labor Day 2013.
Culturally, Labor Day is considered the end of summer. Past fashion etiquette has dictated people stop wearing white after Labor Day. But more modern views are changing that guideline, and it’s likely we’ll see more white clothing after Labor Day 2013 than ever before.
